A new lawsuit filed by parents in St. John the Baptist Parish is seeking to close a school that sits just 500 yards from a carcinogen-producing plant.

The parents of students at Fifth Ward Elementary School in Reserve want the school to be shut down and all students moved to LaPlace Elementary. Lawyers for the parents say nearly half of the students who attend Fifth Ward live closer to LaPlace and they allege the school zoning disproportionately sends Black students to the school.
