This year, Verite News celebrated our 2-year anniversary. And as we close out 2024 we are proud to look back on some of the outstanding work our reporters have produced.

Verite News continues its mission to report stories about communities and people that too often have been overlooked and omitted by traditional media.

This year our reporters have shined a light on issues facing the unhoused in our communities. We partnered with the Data Hub on a story about how the New Orleans Police Department uses force more against Black civilians. We told the story of how a Baton Rouge-based private equity firm wants to buy Entergy’s gas utilities in Louisiana. We reported on City Park’s plans to build a road through a popular urban farm and the community organizing campaign that saved the farm. Verite News reporter Rich Webster joined with ProPublica to explore how a federal law could block reforms to the state’s health care system for inmates. Tristan Baurick reported on what Donald Trump’s promise to kill offshore wind energy would mean for the Gulf of Mexico.

We’re also proud to say that we have continued our mission to highlight the New Orleans area’s unique culture through thoughtful coverage, compelling storytelling and historical retrospectives, by publishing contributions from writers, poets, musicians and other culture bearers who are fighting to preserve our traditions while creating new ones.

We don’t take our responsibilities to our community lightly and want to reassure you – our readers – that we will continue to work to earn your trust. We thank you for your support.
