Editor-in-Chief
Terry Baquet, a native New Orleanian from the 7th Ward, leads Verite’s editorial vision of elevating voices from New Orleans communities that have been historically dismissed or ignored to create thoughtful, solution-based coverage on crucial topics.
Terry earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in English from Hampton University and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Before joining Verite as its founding editor-in-chief July 2022, Terry was an editor at The Times-Picayune for 28 years. He was part of a team that won two Pulitzer Prizes for coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
“Verite highlights the issues that the disenfranchised communities of New Orleans and Louisiana confront in their lives.”
Verite’s Impact:
“In April, Verite produced a five-part series, “In The Dark,” looking at abuses in the Baton Rouge Police Department and the failure of internal affairs to hold the officers and the system accountable.”
READ THE ‘IN THE DARK’ SERIES
“We led the way in local coverage of the short-term rental issues that are driving up housing prices, squeezing affordable housing options, pushing out longtime residents and gentrifying historic neighborhoods that are the lifeblood of the city.
We did some deep-dive data reporting that produced a comprehensive map and analysis on how new regulations would — and wouldn’t — affect current short-term rental operations.
Verite has produced ongoing coverage of public housing residents struggling to find affordable places to live.
We investigated various elements in the region’s criminal justice system, including a proposed law that would allow police to keep onlookers at least 25 feet away from the kinds of arrest scenes that have produced videos of officer misconduct that resulted in deaths.
And we did a two-part look at the gun violence that erupted at a Mother’s Day second-line parade 10 years ago that left 19 people wounded, including a local cultural advocate who died from her injuries four years later.”
